Ugh. I almost didn’t want to write about this because I didn’t want to “spread” it, but I think it’s important to call it out as: FAIL.

Basically, smart water has attempted a viral campaign starring Jennifer Aniston that pretty much mocks web culture. That’s like starting a grassroots campaign in France to abolish the French language.

That’s why I have chosen the We Are Family™ wave for this post. This wave is about “finding identity through community” and what these ad execs failed to understand… that “the internet” is home to a strong and proud community. So why we would “virally spread” something that makes fun of us, is completely confounding to me.

As a popular web culture blog says “…to its employment of memes that are quite literally as old as the Internet, this video was clearly produced by people who not only lack a basic familiarity with Internet culture, but appear to be openly disdainful of the Internet and anyone who uses it.”

Nerds glasses, pocket protectors and clipboards? Seriously? Soooooo dated. For the record, in case some of you still think that’s the image of a “geek”… it’s not. In fact, ahem, some of us are actually hot. So there.
