Bisphenol A, the plastics chemical in everything from baby bottles to the liners of soda cans was recently declared safe by the FDA after much public concern due to media reports of its dangers to human health. This updated report to the public would be very stress-relieving to both consumers and food distributers if it were not for the fact that the day before this pronouncement, another study, published in Environmental Health Perspectives on August 14th, found yet more cause for concern. It was determined that doses typically found in human blood adversely affect both the risk of heart attack and type 2 diabetes. Angel Nadal, of the Spanish Biomedical Research Network in Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Disorders asked why governments in Europe and the United States put money into studying pollutants then ignore the findings of the scientists. The easy answer is the corrupting influence of the power and money of corporations on government watchdog agencies. A more nuanced one would involve concerns of disrupting billion dollar industries without being very certain of the science involved.
